Chlorine
Chlorine-based chemicals are the preferred disinfectants for
treating drinking water. Approximately 98% of all systems that
treat water use some form of chlorine to disinfect. Chlorine is
used to eliminate waterborne diseases such as Cholera, Typhoid,
Hepatitis A, and Dysentery. Liquid Chlorine is a more preferable
alternative to chlorine gas because of the inhalation hazard
presented by chlorine gas.
Chloramination
Chloramination is the process of adding ammonium to the chlorine
injection to create chloramines. Chloramines produce fewer DBP’s
(Disinfectant By-Products) than free chlorine alone, while still
maintaining total chlorine. The recommended dosing of Chlorine:
Ammonium, by NAPCO Chemical is 4:1.
